Origin/meaning

Arms granted in 1958.

Most prominent in the arms is the "burning but flourshing" bush in which God first revealed himself to Moses. Union College is the college of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, and this has been a key motif for Irish Presbyterians since the mid–nineteenth century. The two silver inkhorns are a suitable reminder of the two historic colleges, Magee College and the Assembly's College, that united to form Union College in 1978. The crest, a pair of hands thrusting forward a book, is an apt reminder that "the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds" as they bring down proud arguments and "take every thought captive to obey Christ" (2 Cor. 10:4–5). The motto is taken from Proverbs 23:23 and means "Buy the truth and sell it not"-an exhortation to gather and treasure spiritual knowledge.
