Bishop of Bismarck, 1940-1951

Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The red field features three griffin heads, mythological creatures with the head of an eagle (the king of birds) and the body of a lion (the king of beasts). Griffins symbolize valor, death-defying bravery and vigilance. The added flaming heart represents intense, burning affection. The arms are based on the design of the arms of an Irish Ryan family to symbolise the last name of the bishop.
The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop by instruction of the Holy See, of March 1969, confirmed in March 2001.
