Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on December 15, 1980 by the College of Arms, London.

The arms are based on the school colours, maroon and gold, with the blue bend referring to the uniforms worn by the students until the 1950s.

The books and torches refer to learning, whereas the palm tree is the palmetto, the state tree of South Carolina.

The motto Veritas cum Libertate means Truth with Liberty.
