Origin/meaning

The arms show the castle of the Counts of Hessen-Darmstadt in the town. The castle first appears on the seals of the town in 1667. The castle itself was built in the 13^th century and rebuilt in 1575 by Count Georg I. The arms were redrawn and officially granted in 1929.
