Until the Reformation the town was the seat of the Bishops of Brandenburg. The crossed keys were the arms of the [[Diocese of Brandenburg]] and used by the city. The city continued the use after the demise of the diocese.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on January 22, 1999.
