Origin/meaning

The oldest seal of the city dates from the early 15th century, even before the city rights were granted in 1471. The seal showed the arms of the Lords of Meckenheim, who ruled the village at the time.

The above arms are derived from the second seal, known since 1446. Later seals sometimes showed roses instead of grapes. The arms were officially granted in 1845.

The lion is the lion of the Pfalz, and should be gold in black. When the arms were granted in 1845, the colours were shown wrongly in the colours of Bayern, to which the city belonged at the time. The grapes are a symbol for the local viticulture and the letter F is the town's initial.
