Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on
Bad Tölz was mentioned as a market town in 1281 and received more privileges in 1331 from Emperor Ludwig der Baier. The oldest seal probably dates from the same time, but is known only since 1374.
The oldest seal already showed the lion of the Pfalz, as the King was also Prince-Elector of the Pfalz. All later seals and images show the demi-lion, but the colours and the direction the lion is facing varied often during the centuries.
The colour of the field is often shown as blue, the present black remains unchanged since the early 19th century. However, in the 19th century the lion was often shown facing left instead of the traditional right (see the seal below). The above arms with the lion facing right are officially adopted in 1906 when Bad Tölz received city rights.
