Origin/meaning
The oldest known seal of the city dates from 1559 and shows a quartered shield. In the first and fourth quarter is a canting crown (Krone), in the second and third the quartered shield of the Hohenzollern family, viscounts of Nürberg, who ruled the city at the time. This composition was used until the late 17th century.
In the meantime, however, a different shield was used. The new shield first appears on a seal dating from 1654, showing a similar division of the shield as in the present arms, with two crowns. Later only this composition was used, but in many different colour combinations. The present arms have been used since the early 20th century.
