Origin/meaning
The village was granted city rights by count Rupert von Dürn in 1298. Probably at the same time the first seal was used. Unfortunately it is lost. The oldest seal from Forchtenberg dates from the 15th century. It already shows the archangel Michael, the patron saint of the city. Ever since the archangel has been on the seals and arms of the town, although the composition has changed throughout the centuries.
The colours became official only in 1936. The arms were confirmed in slightly changed colours on June 7, 1978.
