Origin/meaning

The arms are a combination of the arms of Münster in the first (right) quarter, whereas the blue field represents the arms of the family Von der Recke. Heessen is situated in the Münsterland, whereas the family lived in the local castle Haus Heessen from the 15th century until 1778. The village was of little importance before this century and thus did not use its own arms or seal. Due to coal mining the town grew rapidly and became a city in 1964. The arms were designed and granted in 1929.

The arms are now used of the Bezirk Heessen of the city of Hamm.
