Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on April 19, 1938.
The district historically was part of the State of Köln. The Archbishops of Köln acquired in 1368 the County of Arnsberg to which the district belonged. The arms show the eagle of the Counts of Arnsberg in the right half. The left half shows the pales of the Lords von Bilstein, who held several estates until the early 14th century, when these estates were acquired by the Counts of Arnsberg.
