Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on January 2, 1955.

The municipality was created when the large Saterland municipality (formed in 1933) was abolished in 1945 and split into 9 new municipalities. Three of these, Ramsloh, Scharrel and Strücklingen historically belonged to the Saterland region and all three wanted to use the image of the medieval seal of the region. The government of Niedersachsen thus decided that all three municipalities could use the image of the seal in slightly different composition.

The seal showed a King on a throne. This is most likely the German Emperor Charlemagne, who granted a number of rights and freedoms to the area in the 9th century. The seal also showed the imperial eagle besides the throne, which was used in the arms of Ramsloh and Strücklingen, but not in the arms of Scharrel.

As no historical colours were known, gold, red and blue, the colours of the State of Oldenburg, were chosen. Saterland was an semi-independent region and was incorporated in the Grand Duchy (since 1918 State) of Oldenburg in 1803, until its dissolution in 1945.
