Origin/meaningThe arms were granted on March 22, 1938. The arms show the castle Ludwigstein, built in 1415 by Count Ludwig I of Hessen. The area ever since belonged to Hessen, the town of Witzenhausen itself was already built by the Counts of Hessen in 1225. The small shield also shows the arms of Hessen.
