Origin/meaning
The arms are based on the arms of the Lords of Wolfenbüttel-Asseburg, who granted the city rights in 1220. Ever since the 13th century the seals and arms show the running wolf above the garbs. Until the 17th century the field was silver only. The colours of the garbs and other parts have changed often during the centuries (see image below). The present shape and colours are used since the 19th century, when the arms were also used with helmet, mantling and crest, see below.
