Origin/meaning
The arms first appear on the local seal dating from the middle of the 16th century. The arms show the local patron saint, St. Bartholomew, standing behind the shield with the arms of the Lords of Werthern, who acquired parts of the County Wiehe in 1453 and the complete county in 1461.
