The arms were officially granted by King Ludwig I of Bayern on August 29, 1845.
The image of the H. Madonna with child is derived from a statue in the local chapel, dating from the 14th century. The statue is very famous and the town has been a place of pilgimage for centuries.
The statue is also part of the arms of the Czech town Nová Včelnice
