Origin/meaning

The oldest seal of the city dates from the middle of the 14^th century and already show a knight on a pile of stones. The latter is a canting element (Staffelberg). The knight is St. George, the patron saint of the city.

On the seals from 1640 and the 18^th century he is shown killing a dragon and the pile of stones is removed. In 1803 the city adopted unofficially a shield with three letters S (Siegel Stadt Staffelstein), but in 1819 the historical arms were granted and the colours were defined for the first time.
