In 1174 Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa built a castle around which the town developed. From the castle is now only a ruin left. Hence the Imperial eagle as the main charge of the arms. The eagle can also be seen on the seal of the town from the 13<sup>th</sup> century. The small shield is the arms of the [[Köln (State)|State of Köln]], to which the town belonged from 1424-1762. Different arms were shown in a roll of arms from around 1500, see below. | |||

Origin/meaning
In 1174 Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa built a castle around which the town developed. From the castle is now only a ruin left. Hence the Imperial eagle as the main charge of the arms. The eagle can also be seen on the seal of the town from the 13th century. The small shield is the arms of the State of Köln, to which the town belonged from 1424-1762. Different arms were shown in a roll of arms from around 1500, see below.
