Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on July 4, 1975.

The red is used as a symbol for the flowering heather (Erica sp) in the municipality. The cross is a canting symbol (Kirch=church). At the same time is also indicates the crossing of two main historical trade roads in the municipality. One of these was the 'salt-road' from and to Lüneburg. The salt is also symbolised on the centre of the cross.

The golden field refers to the sandy soils in the region . The plough is a typical symbol for the agricultural character of the municipality.
