Origin/meaning
The town became a city in 1358 and was ruled until 1392 by the Lords of Randerath. The oldest, late 13th century, seal shows the arms of the Lords of Randerath, a chequered shield of 25 fields. The second seal, which dates from the early 15th century, shows the present arms, only with a crowned lion. The lion is the lion of Jülich, as in 1392 the town became a possession of the Dukes of Jülich. The present arms, with the uncrowned lion, are in use since the 18th century.
In the early 20th century the arms below were shown in the Kaffe Hag albums. These arms show the lion, but in the base a checquered bar, probably taken wrongly from the arms of the Counts of the Mark (?).
