The arms show the famous rune stone of Busdorf, one of the largest in Germany. The inscription reads : King Sveinn placed the stone in memory of Skarði, his retainer, who travelled to the west, but who then died at Hedeby.

The two lions are taken from the arms of the Duchy of Schleswig and the Schleswig-Flensburg district.
