On July 18, 1908 the arms were officially granted by Emperor Wilhelm II.


Borgholz received city rights in the early 14<sup>th</sup> century. The oldest seal dates from 1446 and shows the Bishop of Paderborn in a gate. The city wat the time belonged to the State of Paderborn. In the 17<sup>th</sup> century the fleur-de-lis appears on the seals. The fleur-de-lis was the symbol used by the State of Paderbron. Initially the arms showed three lilies.
