Origin/meaning
The city of Sulzburg was founded in the second half of the 13th century by the Lords of Üsenberg. The city was acquired in 1371 by the Counts of Freiburg, in 1391 by the Markgraves of Hachberg and in 1415 by the Counts of Baden. The city belonged to Baden until the early 20th century.
The local salt mining was of great importance and the reason the city was founded in the first place. The oldest seal of the city is known since 1283 and already shows the miner, the mine, the protecting angel and a star. All later seals show the same composition, even though the figures differ widely in size and shape. The use of the composition in a shield first appears in the late 19th century, and the colours remained unchanged until 1972. The new arms show the mountain and the angel also in silver instead of the green and gold as before.
