Origin/meaning

The present arms were granted in 1950 and based on the old seal.

The town got town and market rights in the 16th century from the Cirksena family (see Emden) and became city in 1823. At the same time the first seal was made. This seal already showed the L (the town's initial), with the stars and rose.

Between 1861 and 1950 the city used arms with a castle, over which stood a lion. In the gate of the castle a shield with a horse (probably the horse of Niedersachsen), as well as matling, helmet and crest, see image below.
