MENGEN
State : Baden-Württemberg
District (Kreis) : Sigmaringen (until 1972 Saulgau)
Additions : 1972 Ennetach; 1975 Beuren, Blochingen, Rosna, Rulfingen
Official blazon
In gespaltenem Schild vorne in Rot auf grünem Dreiberg ein linksgewendeter goldener Löwe, hinten in Silber vor einem zunehmenden roten Mond mit Gesicht ein sechsstrahliger roter Stern.
Origin/meaning
Mengen already received city rights in 1276 by King Rudolf I of Habsburg. At the same time the first seal was made. It already showed a combination of a lion and a crescent. Its origin is not known, the crescent and star may have a religious origin, but may also have been an old village sign. The lion probably is the lion of Habsburg. The crescent and star have for a long time been used as the arms. The lion reappeared in the 19th century and when the arms were officially granted at the beginning of this century the lion remained.
