Official blazon
Geteilt von Silber und Rot; oben ein grüner Lorbeerkranz, beseitet von zwei roten heraldischen Rosen; unten nebeneinander eine silberne Mauerkrone und eine goldene Lagerkrone über einer silbernen heraldischen Rose.
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted in 1651 by Voit von Salzburg, bishop of Bamberg. He also granted the supporters, helmet and crest of his personal arms to the arms. These were abolished in 1819, but still sometimes used in the 20th century.
The roses are taken from the older seals of the city, which showed three roses since 1391. The laurel branch symbolises the bravery and the victory over the Swedish Army in the Thirty-years War. The two crowns are canting symbols. Hupp showed in the 1920s both crowns golden and with a ribbon around the wreath, see image below.
