The city of Gernsheim was a possession of the [[Mainz (State)|State of Mainz]] from 1232-1802 and acquired city rights in 1356. The oldest, 14<sup>th</sup> century seal, showed already the wheel of the [State of Mainz. All later seals and images have shown the wheel, which officially was granted as arms in 1925.
