Origin/meaning
In 1280 Count Albert II of Hohenburg built a new castle on the Neckar river, which he named Rotenburg. Around the castle a village developed, that received city rights in the early 14th century and which in 1350 joined with neighbouring Ehingen to a new city.
The oldest seal dates from 1282 and shows the divided shield of the Counts of Hohenburg. The arms have thus not changed since, even though often some form of decoration was used in the red field.
