Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on February 22, 1544 and again on October 14, 1952.

The oldest known arms of the city date from the seals of the 14th century. It shows on the right site the arms of the Abbey of Würzburg (the points) and in the left part the quartered arms of the Counts of Castell. The area belonged both to the abbey and the counts.

In 1544 Konrad Prince-Bishop of Würzburg granted new arms, in which the quartered shield was replaced by a canting brook (Bach=brook). On the arms were placed a helmet with a hat and a double wing as a crest. The mantling of the helmet is red/white (Würzburg) and gold/blue (river). The arms are still valid, except that the helmet and crest are very rarely used.
