Origin/meaning
The arms were first granted on December 6, 1422 by Prince Friedrich I of Brandenburg.
Unfortunately the original picture is lost, but the seals dating from the 16th and 17th century bear the year 1422 and show on the left part the quartered shield of the Hohenzollern family, who ruled the city in the 14th century. The right part shows a miner with pieces of ore.
The picture may be canting (Schau den Stein, or see the stone) and has basically not changed since. In the 16th century it was still a (white) miner, but after 1692 the figure becomes a black person.
In the 19th century the canting part was lost and the Moor was given a pice of meat to look at. In the beginning of this century the meat was again replaced by a stone.
