The arms are based on the arms of the Counts of Lüchow, who ruled the city in medieval times, and who became extinct in 1318. The oldest known seal of the city dates from the 13th century and shows already the above arms. Later seals and arms all showed a castle with the arms of the counts in the gate, see images below. Since the middle of the 20th century the city again uses only the oldest arms.

Origin/meaning

The arms are based on the arms of the Counts of Lüchow, who ruled the city in medieval times, and who became extinct in 1318. The oldest known seal of the city dates from the 13th century and shows already the above arms. Later seals and arms all showed a castle with the arms of the counts in the gate, see images below. Since the middle of the 20th century the city again uses only the oldest arms.
