Origin/meaning
Schmölln received city rights in 1484, but the oldest seal dates already from 1396. The seal showed already the above arms, which show St. Mary on a throne, the patron saint of the city. In front of the throne is a helmet with as a crest a bunch of feathers.
This helmet is derived from the arms of the Counts of Reuss, who ruled the city at the time and who granted the city rights.
