Origin/meaning

The arms are a combination of the arms of Ostfriesland (harpy) and the local castle. The harpy is originally the arms of the Cirksena family, counts of Ostfriesland. In the early 15^th century the Cirksena family inherited the castle in Berum. In 1443 the castle was rebuilt. The family owned the castle until the late 17^th century. In the 18^th century it was used as the local courthouse.
