The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city, dating from the middle of the 14th century. Itzehoe had received city rights in 1238 from Count Adolf IV of Holstein. The seal showed a city wall with two towers, rising from a sea, and between the towers a small shield with the arms of the Counts of Holstein (Nesselblatt or nettle-leaf). Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on March 26, 1938.

The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city, dating from the middle of the 15th century, see images below. Itzehoe had received city rights in 1238 from Count Adolf IV of Holstein. The seal showed a city wall with two towers, rising from a sea, and between the towers a small shield with the arms of the Counts of Holstein (Nesselblatt or nettle-leaf). The use of the Nesselblatt in a shield continued until 1918. In the present arms the Nesselblatt appears without the shield.
