FRITZLAR

State : Hessen
District (Kreis) : Schwalm-Eder Kreis (until 1973 Fritzlar-Homberg)
Additions: 1972 Cappel, Geismar, Haddamar, Lohne, Obermöllrich, Rothhelmshausen, Ungedanken, Wehren, Werkel; 1974 Züschen

Wappen von Fritzlar/Arms (crest) of Fritzlar
Official blazon
German blazon wanted
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms are similar to the arms of Mainz. Fritzlar belonged to the State of Mainz and the oldest seals, dating from the early 12th century, show the patron saint of Mainz, St. Martin.

In 1227 the saint was replaced by a picture of the bishop himself. In 1265 the seals changed again, this time a walled city replaced the bishop. Around the castle a sun and crescent were placed. These were later replaced by the wheels of Mainz, which were placed horizontally above the castle. Later the castle disappeared on the seals and the arms were used.

The arms proper never showed the castle, only the wheels and cross.
