METTMANN
State : Nordrhein-Westfalen
District (Kreis) : Mettmann
Additions: 1974 Metzkausen
Origin/meaningThe arms were granted in 1966, but have been used since the 19th century. The arms have a unique history, like many arms they have been derived from seals. Only, in the case of Mettmann they are not derived from seals of the city or local court, but from the local guild of craftsmen from 1776. It thus originally did not represent the city at all ! The arms show the two (old) local churches, the catholic and Lutheran churches. From 1938-1946 the arms showed a hook and above it a crown made of leaves. These arms were not historical and were again replaced by the old arms. The old seal of the town showed the patron saint, St. Lawrence, standing behind a shield, divided with the lions of Jülich and Berg and the arms of Ravensberg (chevrons). The arms represented the families that ruled over the city. These arms were shown in the Coffee Hag albums in the 1920s:
