Origin/meaning
Ladenburg was already a fortified town in the 12th century and received city rights in the next centuries. The oldest seal of the city is known from 1253 and shows a castle, with between the two towers two crossed keys. The keys are the symbol of the State of Worms, to which the city partly belonged until 1705. The composition was later placed on a shield and remained unchanged until 1705. In that year the city became part of the Pfalz and the shield was divided in the silver and blue colours of the Pfalz. At the same time the golden keys were changed into blue.
