HOCKENHEIM
State : Baden-Württemberg
District (Kreis) : Rhein-Neckar Kreis (until 1973 Mannheim)
German | In von Schwarz und Blau geteilten Schild oben ein wachsender, rot bewehrter, rot bezungter und rot gekrönter goldener Löwe, unten zwei schräggekreuzte silberne Hakenstangen. |
English | blazon wanted |
Origin/meaning
The present arms were granted in 1895, when the town became officially a city.
The arms are a combination of the lion of the Pfalz and two hooks as a canting symbol (Haken=Hogckna in dialect=hook).
The arms were based on a 16th century seal of the village. It showed the lion of the Pfalz (to which Hockenheim then belonged), above the two hooks. A later seal shows three roses in addition to the hooks in the lower part of the shield.
When the town became part of Baden, the lion of Pfalz was removed. The hooks were still used in the arms and symbols of the town. The lion was reinstalled in 1895.
