The arms were granted in 1957 and are based on the seal of the city dating from the 15<sup>th</sup> century. The arms show the lion of the Pfalz and the arms of the Wittelsbach family (see [[Bayern]]). The Wittelsbach family steadily increased their influence in the town and got all the rights in 1468. All seals show the same elements, except that a 18<sup>th</sup> century seal shows three small shield instead of two.
