The arms date from the 13<sup>th</sup> century and show a castle with in the gate the rose of [[Lippe]]. The city was ruled by the Counts of Lippe, who founded the city between 1231 and 1255. The arms thus basically never changed, except that the rose is sometimes seen in a shield above the towers.
