The arms were granted in 1908 and are based on the seals used from 1536 until the 19<sup>th</sup> century. The small shield shows the arms of the Counts of [[Nassau]], who ruled the city for a long time, and who granted the city rights in 1287. The oldest seals, known since the late 13<sup>th</sup> century and used until the 16<sup>th</sup> century, only showed the arms of Nassau.
