English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on November 26, 1963.

Wedel grew around a ferry over the river Elbe and became an important town on the cross-roads of several trading routes. As a symbol of trade the Counts of Schauenburg, who ruled the town, erected a statue of Roland in the town square. This wooden statue was in 1585 replaced by a new stone figure, which was made to look lake emperor Charlemagne. This typical symbol was placed in the arms of Holstein to indicate that the town was part of Holstein. Already in 1597 the arms of the town were described as such and they have not changed since. The official arms have been drawn according to the fashion of the time, but the basic composition did not change.
