The arms show the lion of the Counts of [[Nassau]], who founded the city of Siegen in 1224. The Counts ruled the area from the 12<sup>th</sup> century until the 17<sup>th</sup> century. The left half shows some mining tools, symbolising iron mining and metal industry as an important economic factor since the early Middle Ages.
