The arms were officially granted on September 13, 1994.

The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city, known from the 14th century. The eagle is the eagle of Brandenburg, the tree is a canting symbol (-walde means forest). The meaning of the keys is not clear, they may be derived from a local saint (St. Peter ?), they may be seen as a symbol for 'the gateway to the East', or they may indicate the city character (to open the gates). During the years the elements of the arms have been the same, but the actual composition and colours have changed regularly, see for example the image below.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on September 13, 1994.

The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city, known from the 14th century. The eagle is the eagle of Brandenburg, the tree is a canting symbol (-walde means forest). The meaning of the keys is not clear, they may be derived from a local saint (St. Peter ?), they may be seen as a symbol for 'the gateway to the East', or they may indicate the city character (to open the gates). During the years the elements of the arms have been the same, but the actual composition and colours have changed regularly, see for example the image below.
