The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city. Freudenberg received city rights in 1456 and the oldest seal dates from 1473. The seal already shows a castle. As no colours were known, the arms were granted in 1911 in blue and gold, the colours of [[Nassau]], as the city was part of the county of Nassau-Siegen.
