Frankenau was founded in the early 13<sup>th</sup> century and received city rights in 1242, which were further confirmed in 1266. The village, however, did not develop into a real city. The oldest seals of Frankenau date from the middle of the 16<sup>th</sup> century. The seal showed the lion of Hessen, but without the characteristic bars. The colours are known since 1605.
