The present arms were granted in 1950 and based on the old seal.

The town got town and market rights in the 16<sup>th</sup> century from the Cirksena family (see [[Emden]]) and became city in 1823. At the same time in the 16th century the first seal was made. This seal already showed the L (the town's initial), with the stars and rose.

Between 1861 and 1950 the city used arms with a castle, over which stood a lion. In the gate of the castle a shield with a horse (probably the horse of Niedersachsen), as well as mantling, helmet and crest, see image below.
