Origin/meaning
The oldest seal of the city is known from 1421, but probably dates from the late 14th century. The seal already shows the above arms, only with a straight division line. The first quarter shows the arms of the State of Bamberg, to which the city belonged from 1390-1803. The fish hook in the second quarter is taken from the arms of Bishop Lamprecht von Brunn of Bamberg, who was Bishop of Bamberg in 1390. The base shows the local fortifications. From the 16th century onwards the division line is shows as in the arms above. The colours are known since 1603 and have not changed since.
Only from 1819-1836 the lion of Bamberg was replaced by a blue and silver divided quarter, as a symbol of Bayern. In 1803 the city had become part of Bayern and all references to former states were generally removed or replaced by Bavarian symbols at the time.
