German	In Silber eine wachsende rote Zinnenmauer mit offenem, von zwei schwarz gefugten, erniedrigten Türmen mit je drei Rundbogenfenstern und Zeltdach flankiertem Tor, erhöht von zwei Vierpassöffnungen in Schwarz und Silber, aus den Zinnen wachsend ein (Erz)-Bischof in natürlichen Farben mit wallenden blonden Haar, blauem Ornat und Mitra und silbernem Pallium, in den angehobenen Händen rechts einen silbernen Krummstab mit links gewandter goldener Krümme, links ein offenes silbernes Buch mit Goldschnitt, leerer und golden unterlegter schwarz beschrifteter Seite, im Torbogen ein Schildchen, Portalseiten und unteren Schildrand berührend, darin in Blau ein goldener, rot bewehrter und -bezungter Löwe.

Origin/meaning

The arms were adopted in 1915, but not officially granted, only on August 20, 1975 the arms were officially granted.

Siegen received city rights in the early 13^th century, and the oldest seal is known since 1248. The arms are based on this oldest seal.

The seal is a combination of the image of the Bishop of Köln, a city wall as a symbol for the city itself and the arms of Nassau in the gate. The city was a possession of the Counts of Nassau and the Bishops of Köln (until 1420). After 1317 the lion of Nassau was surrounded by billets (vertical blocks) of gold, but these were not added to the arms of the city (but still sometimes shown).

Previously the city used three letters S on its seals.
