Origin/meaning
The first arms were granted on September 25, 1908, new arms were granted on January 16, 1976.
The first arms are based on the oldest seal of the city, known since 1328. The seal showed a view of a city, with in the gate the arms of the Lords of Büren, who owned the city and who granted the city rights. The colours of the shield were determined in 1908 and were based on those of the Lords of Büren.
After the mergers the new arms were based on the arms of the former Amt Wünnenberg.
The golden cross symbolises the former State of Paderborn, to which the whole area belonged. The base of the shield shows the arms of the former Lords of Büren.
The silver oak leaves symbolise the forests in the area, the wheat ears the agriculture.
